There was a time when Pulp was huge news, hundreds of magazines and books dedicated to the craft of telling high fantasy adventures that sprung from the page into the readers imagination! With characters such as Conan, Tarzan and Flash Gordon, these stories defined a generation and would influence writers, artists and movie makers alike down the years.Sadly the days of pulp began to draw to a close towards the end of the 1950’s and apart from the odd movie or show here and there, pulp became more or less obsolete. One of the greatest heroes of the pulp era was John Carter, a Confederate officer who finds himself whisked away from Earth and onto the strange world of Barsoom, a world filled with alien creatures, beautiful women and deadly adventure. Carter was created by Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs way back in 1917 and his adventures on Barsoom, the planet we call Mars; have been serialised, retold and reimagined down the years, most recently by Disney Studios and their financial disaster John Carter, a brilliant movie but sadly let down by extremely poor marketing!
Unlike Conan who remained extremely popular after the war and on well into the 70’s before being made into a hugely successful movie featuring a certain Austrian actor, John Carter was relegated to libraries and thrift book shops the most part, though the character still remains as vibrant today as he was back when he was first written. A rich tapestry of alien worlds and strange creatures awaits the reader and now our good friends at Modiphius Entertainment have finally released their printed versions of their roleplaying game based around the characters of the works of Burroughs, something I grew up reading as a child and have loved ever since.
