It has been a while since we got a preview of upcoming units for Star Wars Legion, but with Sabine Wren and Bossk just finally released, Fantasy Flight Games have teased more details on one of the soon to be released units, the Rebel Veterans!
Adding another Core unit to your forces in Star Wars Legion is something that must gamers struggle with. At the moment the only real options for Rebel players has been to take either Rebel Troopers or Fleet Troopers or a mixture of both, likewise the Imperials up till now; only have the choice of Stormtroopers or Snowtroopers.
Adding a new Core contingent can change the dynamic of how you choose your force for Legion and a force that uses the new Rebel Veterans will play very differently than one that just uses regular troops.
A basic four man squad of Rebel Veterans is 48 points, and that’s before any upgrades or additional troopers are added to the unit. It is already eight points more expensive than regular Rebel Troopers and four more than Fleet Troopers! The higher costing is figured into the mechanics however and if you take the Mark II Medium Blaster trooper, he acts independently of the rest of his squad mates and has his own activation token. Sure he is really expensive at 38 points, but he has Fire Support keyword that allows you to had the formidable firepower of his gun to your dice pool and it is Critical 2 which is going to come in real handy.
The Veterans themselves have Coordinate Emplacement Trooper as a keyword, which allows them to issue an order to the fire support trooper, and once they are activated the Veterans gain a dodge token. This can be of advantage if you take Leia as your commander as she can issue a dodge token to the unit when she’s activated, though a cheaper option would be to take the Rebel Officer upgrade.
I think that the Rebel Veterans will be a good way for some players to round out their forces. When you get two units in a box, even if one is a single model unit, they both still count to that all important minimum number of Core units you must take!
As for the miniatures? The models are all decked out for harsh climate survival on worlds such as Hoth, as that is exactly what they are based on. The fatigues are all harsh climate style, yet instantly recognisable as rebels and are made up from the leader, the Mark II Medium Blaster, the CM-0/93 trooper, five regular troopers armed with A-280 Blaster rifles; four of these are human one is a Sullustan the same race as Nien Nunb.
I really like the fact that Fantasy Flight Games are including a lot of aliens in their Rebel units, it makes for a much more diverse army and is fun to paint up.
The Rebel Veterans will be available in late July
