It has been quite a while since the first live action movie based around the cult roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons first hit cinemas, in fact it has been nineteen years since Courtney Solomons movie was released!
The movie only grossed around $33 million on a budget of $35 million and despite having a great cast, the movie starring Thora Birch, Justin Whalin, Marlon Waynes, and Jeromey Irons tanked and all the subsequent sequels were direct to DVD releases or made for cable.
Now with the success of Stranger Things and the rise of fantasy in shows like Game of Thrones and the upcoming Witcher gaining lots of interest, the owners of Dungeons and Dragons, toy giant Hasbro are wishing to bring the game back once more the the big screen, with the hopes of setting up a franchise that will rival Marvels mighty cinematic universe.
Goldstein and Daley are the men behind the hit comedy movie Game Night, and co-wrote Spider-Man Homecoming for Marvel, as well as working on the hit comedy Horrible Bosses and its sequel.
The goal from Hasbro is to turn its newly created AllSpark Pictures into a powerhouse studio and seeing as the toy company owns dozens of hot properties such as GI Joe, Transformers, Monopoly, My Little Pony, and Power Rangers, it makes sense that they want to tie them altogether and try to emulate what Disney did with the current wave of Marvel movies!
As of yet no word of casting has been announced, though there is no shortage of famous actors who are roleplayers such as Vin Diesel who would most likely kill to get a part in a huge budge D&D movie.
