Star Wars Legion Wish List Part 1

Star Wars Legion has been out for over a year now and during that time we have had some pretty great releases that have added extra elements to the game and expanded on the characters and units available. With the announcement of Star Wars Legion: The Clone Wars Core Set recently, and a video posted by the ever excellent Jay over at Tabletop Oddity, I was thinking of what would make good units or characters for the game and could hopefully be released at a future date.

Of course, all of this is just speculation on my part, but having been a gamer for fifty years now and worked in the industry on and off for nearly thirty years, I have gained a bit of experience at second-guessing and speculating what may be released.

So here is my list which I have broken down into three sections which I will look at in three articles.  Also each entry will have its rating on how likely I feel it is to be released on a scale of 1 being very unlikely to 5 being take my money right now!

Galactic Civil War Era

Covering Episodes IV to VI (A New Hope to Return of the Jedi), Rogue One.

Clone Wars Era

Covering Episodes I to III (The Phantom Menace to Revenge of the Sith), Clone Wars animated show, Rebels animated show, Solo

The New Republic

Covering Episodes VII to IX (The Force Awakens to Rise of the Skywalker)

These articles will cover my thoughts of what would make good additions to the game and also include possible play styles that may suit them, as well as the possible likelihood of them actually being released. This article will also cover characters, units and maybe even vehicles, but will only stick to the canon of the movies and TV shows and not include the expanded universe which I may cover in a future article.

Galactic Civil War Era

The more you tighten your grip Tarkin, the more star systems slip through your fingers

Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan

Okay to go back to my youth and 1977.  When I was 13 and Star Wars was released and it was just called Star Wars with no suffix added or numerals either.

Of course, to date; we have already had several characters released and as I write this we currently have Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Leia Organa, Han  Solo, Chewbacca, The Emperor, Boba Fett, Bossk and  General Veers in Star Wars Legion. On the whole, each of these characters brings their own merits and flaws to the game. Vader and the Emperor are both powerful characters and can dominate a game if used correctly, though they are extremely slow. Other characters like Leia can give excellent buffs to your units, but she is fragile.

Okay with a universe as huge and diverse as Star Wars and a cast of dozens of characters, there are lots to choose from, but not all characters are suitable.  Obvious characters jump right out as totally unsuited for Legion such as Owen and Beru Lars  (Luke’s uncle and aunt) or Adrimal Ozzel who would be pretty much pointless in a game that has soldier fighting against soldier!

This is not an exhaustive list by any means as there are dozens of characters that could appear for both factions of the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance in game!

Lando Calrissian

Lando is a bit of an odd character, to be honest.  First introduced as an old friend and ex partner of Han Han Solo, Lando Calrissian is acting as the administrator of the mining station Cloud City above the gas planet of Bespin.  He is smooth at talking, quick-witted and charming, especially to the fairer sex, he is also a shrewd businessman and con artist, a gambler, liar and cheat, and those are his good qualities!

Lando makes a deal with Darth Vader to hand over his old friend and former rival Han Solo, in exchange the Empire will keep away from Bespin and Lando’s people. Naturally, Darth Vader is not one to make compromises and breaks the deal almost immediately. Lando makes the deal to keep his people as safe as possible, and not because he is a bad person!

Both Billy Dee William’s and Donald Glover have played this scoundrel with great success and Glover was one of the highlights in the recent Solo movie, stealing every scene he was in.

Flamboyant and extravagant as he is, Lando is also world wise and though it’s only hinted at in the movies, his back story in the books puts him down as a pilot equal to Han, and also a better shot!

Game wise, Lando would be an ideal Commander and was promoted to the rank of General in Return of the Jedi, so could lead troops from the front lines. He works well alongside Chewbacca and has an affinity with the Millennium Falcon as he used to own it before Han Solo!

Chance of actual release 4.5 out of 5

Nien Nunb

Not all characters in Star Wars are human, some aliens such as Chewbacca and Greedo are very alien, Nien Nunb is one such character and has appeared in three movies to date (Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi).  Nien is a native of the planet Sullust and looks like an odd monkey alien with very strange features.  He is brave and heroic and helped destroy the second Death Star as co pilot of the Millennium Falcon with Lando Calrissian. Ideally, he would be suited as part of a pilots expansion (see below)

Chance of actual release 2 out of 5

Wedge Antilles
Wedge is a bit of an unsung hero when it comes to Star Wars. The character was involved in the first Death Star run during the infamous Battle of Yavin, was a snowspeeder pilot during the evacuation of Echo Base on the ice planet of Hoth and was instrumental in the destruction of the second Death Star above the forest moon of Endor.  Wedge has long been a fan favorite and went on to become the leader of Rogue Squadron in the extended universe and has till now been mostly overlooked. Sure you can put Wedge as a pilot in at T-74 Airspeeder thanks to the upgrade card, but we really need to have a Wedge miniature as a character, maybe even as the leader of a Rebel Pilots Expansion pack in much the same way that Pao is the leader of the Rebel Pathfinders!

Wedge could have skills that make use of his talents as a pilot or as in the books he could be a strategist and could use his combat skills to outwit the Empire. Like a few characters on this list Wedge would be better as an Operative rather than a commander, but could be treated in much the same way as the Imperial or Rebel officer and be able to be promoted to the rank if you so desire.

Chance of actual release 3.5 out of 5

Cassian Andor

I was a little surprised when Jyn Erso was released for Legion as there are so many other characters that could have been released instead. But on the whole both Erso and Krennic are great additions to Legion and fit in well.

Of course they are not the only two characters in Rogue One A Star Wars  Story and there are a couple who could fit in nicely.

Cassian Andor is a great example of a specialist character, and one who does not mind getting his hands dirty if it benefits the rebellion.  He is a shrewd strategist and was one of the most successful spies in the rebellion. He would be a master at infiltration and scouting out enemy lines and would really well as a specialist rather than a commander.

Chance of actual release 4.5 out of 5

One of the best things about Star Wars has always been its droids. Artoo Detoo and See Threepio rank as some of the most loved characters in cinema history and joining them from the later movies is Beebee Eight, who grace lunchboxes and children’s bedrooms the world over.

On the whole though these much loved characters are non aggressive and a comedy relief, and given the darker nature of Rogue One  it was only natural that any droid character in that movie would be of a much darker nature.

Enter Kay Two Esso (K-2S0) a former Imperial security droid now reprogrammed and loyal to the rebellion.  Standing way taller than your average droid and with a strength that rivals that of a Wookiee, K-2S0 is a perfect partner to have your back in a fight.

Of course K-2SO would not be a commander, but would work really well as an operative, and provide some much needed hitting power.

Chance of actual release 4 out of 5

Dengar is a bounty hunter who makes a very brief appearance in The Empire Strikes Back, when Darth Vader sets a huge bounty on Han Solo.  The character has no lines in the movie, and yet like his counterpart Boba Fett has gone on to gain a hugely loyal fanbase. Dengar appears as an overweight human from the planet Corellia (home planet of Han Solo) and had a very long and prosperous career as a bounty hunter, beginning during the Clone Wars era right up to the fall of the Empire and the death of Palpatine, he even trained a very young Boba Fett in the ways of being a bounty hunter!

Dengar has already appeared in Star Wars X-Wing and been hugely popular and a pretty nasty opponent to face off against.  While he wouldn’t be a commander, he would be perfectly suited to the Operative roll.

Chance of actual release 4 out of 5

C3PO & R2D2

They are two of the most loved characters in the history of cinema, let alone Star Wars and both are sadly missing from Legion. While they are not really combat ready, the two droids could serve in other roles.

Artoo can, of course, be used to repair more or less anything mechanical in nature, but the droid has a tenacity for getting into trouble, in fact as Threepio says “He excels in it”! This could be used to drive missions as many times during the movies, the little astromech droid has held vital information.

Threepio, on the other hand, is pretty much useless in combat but would need to be added to complete the pair. I guess that both could be used as objectives as the Rebels would want to keep them out of enemy hands and the Imperials would want them at all costs.

*UPDATE* Before I could get this wish list live, FFG announced that both R2 and 3PO would be coming in an all new terrain feature later this year.  Small world eh!

Jabba the Hut

Jabba is instantly recognisable to anyone who has watched Star Wars and this loathsome character would be ideal as the leader of the Scum and Villainy faction!

Scum and Villainy is already a faction in X-Wing and features the dregs of the Star Wars universe and would be ideal as a third faction within Legion and who better to lead it than the crime lord himself Jabba!

Jabba would have to be a large model and could be similar to the downed ATST and act more as a terrain piece rather than in combat, as he is far to fat and slow to be a threat, and would most likely have an entourage of bodyguards to look out for him

Chance of actual release 1 out of 5

Bib Fortuna

If Jabba is the over commander of a Scum and Villainy faction, then Bib Fortuna would be his majordomo and right hand.  Fortuna is a bit of a coward in the extended universe and only got his position by tricking someone else into thinking that they were going to be Jabbas right-hand man, only to have him fed to the Rancor just moments after it was presented to Jabba.  The poor unfortunate became the first victim of the beast, but in the end was its demise as his skull was used by Luke Skywalker to hit the control panel that ultimately crushed the creature to death.

Chance of actual release 1 out of 5

Chirrut Îmwe

Introduced in Rogue One A Star Wars Story, Chirrut Îmwe is a blind warrior monk from the planet of Jheda and a Guardian of the Whills, and while not a Jedi or force user, he is highly attuned to the force and uses his heightened sense of hearing to alert him to things sighted people would miss.  He is a formidable combatant with his staff and more than capable of taking on multiple opponents in melee.

He also has a ranged weapon in the form of the lightbow which he is uncannily accurate with.  Like his friend the mercenary Baze Malbus, Chirrut would make a great operative as neither would be a good commander choice.

Chance of actual release 3 out of 5

Baze Malbus

A tough mercenary who is a constant companion to his blind friend Chirrut and an expert with his heavy repeater cannon and is capable of laying down a lot of surpressive fire onto advancing troops.

Again more suited to the operative role rather than a leader, Baze would be an excellent addition to any savvy rebel commanders selection.

Chance of actual release 3 out of 5

There are lots of things that could be added to a Scum faction and they are detailed below, along with some other ideas for great units!

Tusken Raiders

They are expert hunters and marksmen and make the most out of the harsh environment of their desert world of Tatooine.  Sandpeople or Tusken Raiders would make a very good core unit for a Saga era Scum faction. They can be equipped with long range weapons such as rifles and would be formidable in close quarters with their infamous Gaffi Sticks.

Add to that the fact that they can go beserk when enraged much like a Wookiee and throw in maybe a Bantha rider for support and we have the start of a good faction for Scum.

Chance of actual release 2 out of 5

Of course no Scum faction would be complete without a few Jawas thrown in for added measure.  These diminutive creatures are very common on Tatooine and salvage what they can then sell it on like some form of space gypsies.  They are expert scavengers and are excellent at fixing things and are often armed with weapons that work much like an Ion gun so could disrupt vehicles.

Chance of actual release 2 out of 5

Mon Calamari

First appearing in Return of the Jedi, the aquatic race known as the Mon Calamari are renowned for their ability to build starships and even turned the skyscrapers of their underwater cities into a flotilla of spacecraft that dwarf even the mighty Imperial star destroyers. They do make excellent troops and a core unit is a good one for the dream list but I doubt it will ever happen.

Chance of actual release 3.5 out of 5

The Rebellion has a lot of pilots, some wearing their iconic orange flight suits, while others wear different colours and all are trained to survive if they get shot down.  A pilot unit may be perhaps best as a specialist or support unit rather than as a core unit, but could consist of pilots from X-Wings, A-Wings, Y-Wings and B-Wings. It could include characters like Wedge Antilles and Nien Nunb and even Biggs Darklighter or Jeb Porkins! Ideal at infiltration and working behind enemy lines, this unit could be the one to seize objectives from under your opponent’s nose.

Chance of actual release 4 out of 5

Just NO!

Nope not going to happen as they were a total joke and just in Return of the Jedi to sell more toys!

Chance of actual release 7 out of 5

Imperial Troopers

While we have already had Fleet troopers for the rebels, we have yet to have a unit of Imperial troopers such as those seen on the Death Star or star destroyers. With their grey uniforms and slouch hats, they could make an alternative core unit, which may not be as armoured as stormtroopers but would most likely be much more nimble.  Add to the unit a mouse droid and now we are talking!

Chance of actual release 3 out of 5

As i said at the start of this article, this is not an exhaustive list and only speculation and wishful thinking. However, I do think that next year Fantasy Flight Games will announce a third core set covering the New Republic and New Order and of course featuring characters like Ray, Kylo Ren, and Fin!  This would give players the full gaumet of eras to play in and appeal to a lot of fans and of course, make FFG money which is all what its about in the long run.
